While onsite at a customer I was asked is thier any way to copy specific standard iProperties from the model into the drawing? My response was use the Copy Model iProperty Settings from within the document settings of the drawing template. With this option configured common iPorperties such as Company, Description, Project, ect... need only be filled out in the models then copied into the drawings.

More recently I have seen a large demand to customize the information within iProperties. One great way to do this is take advantage of the expressions that can be created in iProperties using either other iProperties or parameter values that have been created during the modeling process. Using Parameter values in expressions in iProperties can allow a user to automate such common iProperties such as description. The keys to doing this successfully are to carefully name your parameters ( User Parameters work best), export those parameters so that they will be shown on the custom tab of the iProperties, and create the correct expression. There is a simple example here in the video to get you started.

One of the least used iProperties tab would have to be the Save options. Inventor allows you to change the way it saves the bitmap upon saving a document. From the help menu, there are five options:
Save Preview Picture
Saves a thumbnail image of the model so that it appears on the File Open dialog box. The default is On; clear the check box to turn Off. To select any remaining options, this option must be selected.
Active Component Iso View on Save
Zooms out and captures an isometric view of the component before saving it.
Active Window on Save
Sets thumbnail image to the view in the graphics window when the file is saved.
Active Window
Click Capture button to set thumbnail image to the view in the active graphics window.
Import From File
Imports thumbnail BMP image from a file. Click Import button to browse to the file containing the image. Image must be 180 x 180 pixels.

Speaking with a customer recently I found that everytime they would create a parts list for a single detail they would go through the steps of adding a parts list then add column information an so on. Well this adds up in time especialy when you do a couple hundred details. Lets take a look at changing this process for them. In there case they want to show a detail number, material and overall domensions for there parts list. I will use a template file for getting my overall dimension easily and add some information to my template title block. Lets take a look.

Some behind the scenes functionality has been added to Inventor 2009's iProperties that could easily be missed if you don't dig hard enough. Not to worry; check out this video for examples of the new Custom Parameter formatting and how that translates into your Bill of Materials.

This is the second part of iProperty enhancements in Inventor 2009. Last week we looked at how we could now edit expressions that we used in an iProperty field. This week we will look at how we can further customize what actually get's output to the iProperty field. Previously you didn't have full control of what format was output to the Custom iProperties tab. Inventor 2009 allows you to control things like units, format and decimal places. You can even select a button that will apply the settings to all like properties!

A nifty added feature in Inventor 2008 allowed you to combine parameter expressions in your iProperties fields. This would allow you to easily create a "stock size" of your parts to be used in your Bill of Materials while maintaining associatvity to the model dimensions. Inventor 2009 offers 2 more ways to better use this new added functionality. This week we will look at one of the new updates....being able to change the expression once it is added to the iPropoerties. In the previous release you had have to completely redo the expression. See how easy it is....
